Guateque is the main economic and commercial center of the region. It has a varied gastronomy offer, supermarkets, small shopping centers, cafes and many powder stores.

In the main park there is a beautiful neoclassical building that functions as the town hall and, diagonally, the municipal parish church (very spacious and comfortable inside) where masses are held daily. It is also the place of origin of the renowned former president, Enrique Olaya Herrera.

The municipality has two municipal swimming pools. A park with a tennis court to the south, called La Colina, and a nice viewpoint to the north, which is usually called “en las antenas.” For those who like pizza, we recommend the Monte Paz restaurant, which also serves craft beer. For burgers you can go to Rancho Martinez, Chiflys or El Social.

For a more traditional Colombian meal, there is the offer of the Paisa Arrieros restaurant, located in the park. And for a fusion meal, the Punto de Origen restaurant.

The bakeries also offer a product of remarkable quality, and in particular you must not forget to take a couple of delicious guayatunas mogollas home. Near Parque de la Colina they also sell a typical Guatemalan dessert called Media Luna, highly recommended if you find the place open.

Guateque is the ideal place to explore the Tenza Valley. From here you can visit the imposing Cerro de Somondoco (approximately 40 minutes away), from where you can see seven municipalities (or more, sometimes), the beautiful Chivor dam with its fjord-like rock formations, the mines of emeralds located in the municipality of Chivor, the tunnels in living rock of the road to Casanare and any other nearby town in the region.
